In November 2020, the Friends of Halliwick Rec (FoHR) surveyed the community to better understand park usage and needs. This represented the first stage to supporting the upgrade of the Rec. We received invaluable feedback which highlighted the great desire for change to happen at the Rec within the community. We collated the findings and noted that residents and Rec users wanted to see better facilities for children of all ages, improved accessibility and lighting, re-surfaced tennis courts and improved planting and seating within the park.
Following the survey, FoHR determined that the regeneration should centre around five aims:
Working with local talent and experts, ideas and improvement plans were drafted. To obtain funding, the plans have been divided into two phases.
Our purpose is to drive change for Halliwick Rec and make it accessible and enjoyable for the whole community through donations, funding and by igniting volunteer help.
Increased planting throughout the park designed to attract a variety of wildlife and give colour in Sprint and Summer. A swale will be built in the North East section of the park which will help water drain and keep the park usable throughout the year. This will ensure the Rec remains usable regardless of the weather or time of year.
Improving lighting and accessibility to the park including a new path through the centre as well as resurfacing and widening the existing paths. This will make the paths more usable for older people and families with buggies as well as provide accessibility for disabled users. It will also make it more suitable for children riding bicycles and rollerskating. New gates at either end will make the park more secure for families with young children.
Working with Kompan, a market leading provider of childrens' play equipment, we will create a new enclosed and combined custom built playground for children aged 2-14 years old, including provisions for SEND children.
Improved seating throughout the park creating opportunities for people of all ages to enjoy the setting and spend more time in it.
Restore and resurface the tennis courts which have fallen into considerable disrepair.
Create a sensory garden in the north west corner of the park, an unused area of the Rec. It will be transformed into a garden designed to stimulate the five basic senses of sight, smell, touch, taste and sound. A space for all ages to improve physical fitness, health, mood and cognition.
Installation of a multi-use games areas (MUGA) for older children and adults, allowing for team sports such as basket ball, netball and football. Space for additional gym equipment to extend exercise opportunities outdoors.
To support accessibility and lighting upgrades undertaken during Phase One, better signage will be installed across the park, including park map. A paved picnic with seating will also be added to extend seating provision.
The park lacks seating areas and varied planting. There are drainage issues making parts unusable during wetter weather.
